Pallikaranai is one of last few remaining natural wetlands of South India and it currently hosts 625 species of flora and fauna. In 1960, this vast wetland was about 6000 hectare and it has reduced dramatically to 695 hectare now by several urban centric anthropogenic activities. Pallikaranai is one of the important places in "Central Asian migratory bird highway". During migration (September to March) Pallikaranai is home to 50,000 birds approx.
